✦ Synopsis
Optical absorption and emission spectra of Er 3þ ion in Er(DBM) 3 Phen-doped polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) have been studied. Based on Judd-Ofelt theory, the optical intensity parameters are calculated to be X 2 ¼ 21:44 Â 10 À20 cm 2 , X 4 ¼ 1:195 Â 10 À20 cm 2 , X 6 ¼ 1:202 Â 10 À20 cm 2 from the absorption spectrum of Er(DBM) 3 Phen-doped polymethyl methacrylate. The optical intensity parameters have been used to calculate the radiative lifetime (6.798 ms) of the excited 4 I 13=2 level. The stimulated emission cross-section for the 4 I 13=2 ! 4 I 15=2 transition is also evaluated. Analysis reveals that Er(DBM) 3 Phen-doped PMMA is promising for the use in rare-earth-doped polymer optical fibers and waveguides.
