The fluorescing sensor is based on the change in fluorescence intensity of a buffered pH indicator solution entrapped in silicone rubber. Exposure to ammonia increases the pH of the trapped solution; this increases the fluorescence intensity, which is monitored via an optical fibre bundle. Ammonium
