✦ Synopsis

Addition of a cbiralie eight-membered ring derivntive of 1, l*-dinaphthyl (I) to a nematic mesophase produces ac apticaf rotatory power d? which exceeds the optical rotation of the solute I by a factor of several orders of magnitude. The temperature dependence Qr (ZJ as wetl as other optical properties are characteristic of cbolesteric liquid crystals. From this, evidence has been derived that nan-mescmorphic chirat molecules transform a nematic into a chotesterio mesophase, The screw-sense of the helical arrangement depends on the otirality of the molecules added.
