โฆ Synopsis
The optical ringing and the incoherent resonance decay of electronically excited (resolution = lo4 cm-r) soiids is observed using the technique of single-mode laser spectroscopy (SLS). The results show that localized states of pentacene in p-terphenyl, at 1.7 K, have a definite phase memory that can be destroyed only above 3 k due to the increased phonon population. Moreover, the optical coherence of the 0,O origin (at 16 882 cm-') gives a homogeneous tinewidth of 40 MHz which is approximately l/100 the width of the vrbronic origin, and orders of magnitude less than the "apparent" width of the resonance. * Supported in part by the Sloan Fund. * Contribution No. 5420.
