Abstract

Random‐bit generators, working as noise generators and producing keys for cryptography's algorithms are very useful in tests of communication links. However, a truly random sequence can be obtained only if a certain physical variable that obeys a certain statistical rule is used. In this paper we show two possible optical setups for a random‐bit generator. They are based on nonlinear quantum dynamics. Their main properties are shown analytically by using numerical simulations. We then use randomness tests to infer the quality of the bit sequences generated by the nonlinear system. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
