Abstract

The absorption spectra of Ti (d^2^), V (d^3^), Cr (d^4^), Fe (d^6^), Co (d^7^), Ni (d^8^), and Cu (d^9^) in CdSe crystals are presented. The main features of the spectra are successfully interpreted using crystal‐field theory for the states of 3d^n^ configuration in a potential of predominantly T~d~ symmetry. It is found that the oscillator strengths of the observed absorption bands are in the range 10^βˆ’2^to 10^βˆ’5^ due to transitions within the 3d^n^ shell. The crystal‐field parameters, Ξ”, and the Racah parameters, B and C, are determined where possible, and discussed.

Many of the important properties of transition-metal complexes depend on the low-energy excitation spectrum formed by d-electrons of the central transition-metal atom. The spectra of this type are usually fit to the well-known crystal field theory or to the angular overlap model. The result of the f
