Abstract

A simple two‐parameter analytic potential adjusted so as to reproduce the experimental energy levels is used to generate wave functions for the ground and excited states of the lithium atom. Using these wave functions in conjunction with the Born approximation and the Russell–Saunders LS‐coupling scheme, we calculate the optical oscillator strengths for various excitations from the 1__s__^2^2__s__(^2^S~1/2~) ground state. The results are compared to experiment and other calculations.
