โœฆ Synopsis

The development of porous systems, aerogels, catalysts, and composites has benefitted from the sol-gel process. Low processing temperature, the development of networks in so- lution, and mixing in the liquid phase are parameters of the process which make it ideal for work on these systems.

Low processing temperature also allows the formation of inorganic-organic polymers which combine the possibilities of organic and inorganic chemistry with the development of e.g. hard coating systems on various substrates (polymers, metals, . . .). Some of these ORMOCER materials (organically modified ceramics) are already in production. To ensure future cooperation, working groups concerned with common research topics (e.g. on ceramic powders) were initiated.

The choice of Colmar as conference location contributed greatly to the success of the meeting by providing an atmosphere for free discussion in charming medieval surroundings and offering superb Alsacian wines and food. This ambient was supported by the excellent local organization and the cooperation of the international advisory board chaired by Dr. Helmut Schmidt (Fraunhofer-Institut fur Silicatforschung, Wiirzburg). It was no surprise that Colmar was chosen as the conference location for Eurogel '91.
