✦ Synopsis
Slow evaporation of the purple coloured aqueous solution containing a stoichiometric mixture of SeO2 and K2CO 3 along with a small quantity of KMnO4 results in the development of a dark-blue coloured crystal. This is identified as KH3(SeO3)2 host-crystal containing a derivative ion of MnO~. A broad comparison between the observed optical absorption spectrum and the electronic spectrum of MnO43 together with the consideration of redox potentials of the processes involved leads to a tentative conclusion that the Mn(V) oxyanion in the form of MnO3 is trapped and stabilized in KH3(SeO3)2 crystals. This seems to be the first report on the stabilization of MnO3 in the solid state.
