✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Single crystals of oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn~1–x~ Mn~x~ O have been grown by chemical vapour transport and thin films of Zn~1–x~ Mn~x~ O, Zn~1–x –y~ Mn~x~ Fe~y~ O have been deposited by pulsed laser ablation and rf magnetron sputtering methods. Optical absorption spectra of the obtained crystals and films have features associated with band‐to‐band direct type transitions and d–d crystal‐field transitions due to presence of Mn^2+^ ions. The observed peculiarities of the Faraday rotation for Zn~1–x~ Mn~x~ O crystals and films suggest of paramagnetic behaviour. In contrast, Zn~1–x –y~ Mn~x~ Fe~y~ O film samples exhibit ferromagnetic‐like behaviour which is confirmed on typical magnetic field dependence of the Faraday rotation at room temperature. The extended Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian and local field method have been used for calculation of dielectric tensor, birefringence coefficient, and circular dichroism of crystal of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with caps at both ends. We have studied the position and value of peaks of the di
