✦ Synopsis
The theory of optical activity in absorption is presented in the context of a scattering formalism. It gives account of CD and ORD band&apes in the whole spectrum, and they are related to the lifetimes of the molecular states involved. Optical activity in the absorption spectra of molecules is a widely used parameter for the characterization of biological and organic systems [ 1 j . Particularly interesting features occur in CD and ORD bands as a result of vibronic contributions to the observed bands [1] . In theoretical studies of these phenomena the contributions of the individual transitions are considered as additive [2] and the band-shapes, at wavelengths close to resonance,
