The mechanism by which physostigmine exerts its behavioral, neuroendocrine and cardiovascular effects was explored in two separate experiments. In the first, the centrally-acting cholinesterase inhibitor physostigmine was compared with the non-centrally-acting agent neostigmine. In contrast to physo
