✦ Synopsis
WE are living in an age of trauma and in both the United States of America and in Great Britain injuries from road accidents and in industry are on the increase. Trauma ranks third in the major causes of death, and in children and young adults it is the most common cause of death.
The present volume, in which many surgeons take part, represents :i compilation of information gained from war experiences and from the care of a large number of civilian casualties at Grady Memorial Hospital, the municipal hospital serving metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia.
After a consideration of the pathophysiology of trauma, the book is divided into four large sections. The first section deals with trauma in general, including the evaluation of the bluntly traumatized abdomen, pre-and postoperative care, and the anaesthetic management.
In Section 2 trauma to the chest is considered in detail, including the oesophagus and diaphragm. In Section 3, the largest section, abdominal injuries are dealt with, while in Section 4 related injuries receive due notice. This is a very practical book, and the many and varied methods of dealing with trauma involving the chest and abdomen are well covered and discussed in detail.
The illustrations have been well chosen, many are original, and they do add to the attraction of the book.
A useful book for the modern surgeon.
