โœฆ Synopsis

Over the last 4 years there has been an increasing interest in the use of satellite imagery for topographic mapping, prompted largely by success of SPOT-1, the first operation satellite generating stereo imagery with a resolution suitable for small scale mapping. However, there has not been the expected use of these data for operational mapping.

This paper describes the market for medium and small scale map products and shows that the slow development of satellite mapping is due to a misunderstanding of the nature of the market and the slow development of suitable software systems.

The paper continues to describe how these problems are being addressed by the development of new mapping systems and suggests future directions for the satellite mapping industry.
