✦ Synopsis

The author begins with a presentation of the general theory of electron dynamics and ele&ron emission. This is followed by a chapter on thermionic vacuum tubes of those types which are extremely useful in electronic devices.

The next few chapters deal with other types of electron tubes and devices. These include photoelectric cells and tubes, thermionic gas tubes, cathode ray oscilloscopes, etc.

A description of the general principles of electron tube circuits cover Chaps. 8-17. Included in these discussions are the treatment of rectifiers, power-supply systems, voltage stabilizers, vacuum tube amplifiers of tuned and untuned type and oscillators. Chapters 18-24 deal with mathematical and physical aspects of semiconductor physics, in particular the motion of charged particles in semiconducting materials. This is followed by an elementary treatment of transistor circuitry problems. The final chapters 18-35, deal with amplitude modulation and demodulation, frequency modulation, FM. receivers and detectors.

In general, the treatment presented in the book is lucid and as such is suitable for self-study.

However, this reviewer feels the book lacks in providing a.n original approach-much of the material is given a purely conventional treatment. Furthermore, it is unfortunate that the author neglected to include a list of references as well as an index.

According to the author, "the book will prove useful to students preparing for degree and associate membership examinations of various engineering institutions". However, the reviewer doubts that the book is complete enough for that.
