The text falls into two main parts, 8 chapters on ink examination and 4 chapters on paper examination. Large portions of the text are devoted to glossaries of terms used in the pen, graphic arts and paper industries, to a historical account of the development of paper manufacture and to descriptions of the manufacture of pens and writing inks. For example, of the 115 pages devoted to paper examination the historical account and the glossary occupy 72.
