โฆ Synopsis
The results on charm production at HERA are reviewed. The data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD predictions. In photoproduction the measured differential cross sections are generally larger than the NLO calculations, in particu]ar in the forward (proton) direction. The study of dijet photoproduction associated with charm demonstrates that a significant resolved component in addition to the direct photon component contribute to the cross section. In deep inelastic scattering NLO QCD predictions are in reasonable agreement with data. The results on charm production are used to determine the charm contribution F~ to the proton structure function and the gluon density in the proton.
