✦ Synopsis

a-Sulfo-G-alanine was prepared by the oxidation of isocysteine (1) which in turn was prepared in low overall yield by multistep procedures, e.g. starting from an uracil derivative (2) or from S-alanine (3). Recently it was reported from this laboratory (4) that a-sulfa+-alanine is obtained in low yield from the reaction of acrylonitrile with fuming sulfuric acid. We wish to describe a simple, one-step synthesis of this compound, comprising the
