β¦ Synopsis
Controversy still surrounds the operative treatment of obstructed or perforated left colon. Earlier clinical evidence' suggested that a clean bowel was an essential prerequisite to safe left colonic and rectal surgery. A more recent clinical study2 demonstrated that the emphasis on a clean bowel as an important factor in postoperative morbidity and mortality may be overstated. This paper describes definitive one-stage resection of the unprepared colon in patients with acute sigmoid volvulus.
