✦ Synopsis

A combined electromagnetic and thermal analysis of microwa¨e batch sterilization of water is presented, based on a one᎐ dimensional model, both with respect to the electromagnetic wa¨e propagation and the heat transfer. The model incorporates impedance-matching tuners, which are continuously optimized to maximize the power deli¨ered to the water sample, whose parameters change with temperature. Numerical results are included, showing typical transient temperature profiles and dissipated power distributions in water for one-sided and two-sided excitations.
