EXCERPTΒ
My uncle, George, is the chief of police, and he's not exactly enthusiastic about my tendency to pry into situations that are none of my business, as he reminds me all the time. So, no surprise when he arrives a half-hour later and the first words out of his mouth are: "How did you manage to get yourself mixed up in another murder?"
"Murder β¦? "It's not like the idea hadn't crossed my mind, but I was sincerely hoping this was an accident.
"We can't be positive, but according to the initial findings of the investigation, the way the body was positioned does not indicate an accident. Are you all right?" he enquires, more gently.
Uncle George sees Emma and me pretty often since we're friends with his daughter, Isabella. Deep down, he cares about us more than he lets on.
"Don't worry," I answer with a reassuring smile.
"I know youβso of course I'm worried. Danny, you're responsible for her. I don't want her getting all tangled up in this as usual."
"I can promise nothing," Danny answers, but I'm not in the mood to laugh.
