The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) principle is a versatile tool for statistical inference of the probability density function (pdf) from its moments as a least-biased estimation among all other possible pdf's. It maximizes Shannon entropy, satisfying the moment constraints. Thus, the MaxEnt algorithm tra

✦ Synopsis
In this paper improvements are made in the numerical conditioning of in®nite element stiness matrices by replacing the characteristic (eigenfunction) basis functions which have global support with basis functions which have local support and appropriate preconditioning. The conditioning and convergence properties of these new in®nite elements are presented in solving two-dimensional exterior problems for the Helmholtz equation.
