It is shown that the bistable behavior of the sublattice formed by apical oxygen atoms 0(4) in the high-T c compounds YBa2Cu307_ x, BiSr2CalCu20 8 is responsible for the experimentally observed hysteresis of ultrasonic wave velocity.
