โœฆ Synopsis

By means of X-ray shadowgraphs determinations of the volumes of mercury .were made, the tube having a radius of 14.738 mm. A formula for the volumes of these menisci is given for radii of 3 to 15 mm. With the aid of the tables for the volumes of mercury mcnisci deduced by B 1 a i sd e 1 1 ') the surface tension is calculated at 430 f 5 dynes/cm at approximately 18ยฐC.

The use of a semi-empirical alternative to the standard Washburn equation for the interpretation of raw mercury porosimetry data has been advocated. The alternative expression takes account of variations in both mercury contact angle and surface tension with pore size, for both advancing and retreat
