November 1936 *) c" is related to thc absorption coefficient A used in other publications of one of us by A = 47:\IVc", where V is the grammoleeular volume.

*) This latter, however, depends only on the nature of the very lowest level, whil at the high temperatures of the absorption measurements the different groups of basic levels are equally occupied. This might account for the different behaviour of V-alum in the two cases.

t) The estimate for Ti and V-alum is especially uncertain as for these salts e" is not proportional to 'I.
