✦ Synopsis

The model can be expressed by the following formula: in which c is the half length of the major axis, a is the half length of the minor axis, AK,"'/AK,'"' is the ratio of the stress intensity factor at the ends of the major axis to that at the ends of the minor axis. h and n are constants.

On the basis of this model, the shape change of a semi-elliptical surface crack can be mathematically determined. The results indicate that the computed values tally with other authors' experimental data. Therefore, we should say that the ratio of the stress intensity factors is the most important mechanical parameter controlling the shape of a semi-elliptical surface crack under fatigue conditions.
