โœฆ Synopsis

A theoretical model of ciliary motility is developed and used to determine the time-dependent locations of dynein activity in the axoneme. A three-dimensional beat form is considered as consisting of the growth and propagation of helical bends separated by tangential straight regions. The pattern of dynein activity which generates this beat form follows simply from the model and the polarity of microtubule sliding. The pattern obtained has some important features in common with that proposed by Sugino & Naitoh (1982, Nature, Lond. 295, 609-611, 1983, J. Submicro. Cytol. 15, 37-42), but there are some differences as well, and these are discussed.

Pertinent experimental results from the literature are also discussed.
