✦ Synopsis

Shape observables measuring the intrinsic quadrupole deformation of the nucleus are identified. The consequences of these shape operators for the collective rotational and W(3) models are derived. The operator measuring the square of the K quantum number is given.

## Abstract Optical‐model potentials are constructed for nucleon‐nucleus scattering. The contribution of collective states to the imaginary part of the optical potential is investigated; the interaction between the incident nucleon and an even‐even deformed target nucleus is considered in the weak

P-wave neutron strength functions of 21 nuclei, in the rare-earth and deformed region 138 < A < 202, have been extracted from the average capture cross sections measured using Sb-Be photoneutrons and activation technique. s-wave neutron contribution is computed using the s-wave resonance parameters
