β¦ Synopsis
Chinese hamster cell lines have a strong tendency to maintain as modal chromosome number the euploid one characteristic of the species. By following the evolution of karyotypes in cloned subpopulation it has been possible to show that these pseudodiploid constitutions are not simply established due to a selective advantage but they are actually generated in populations where pseudodiploid classes had been absent. The possible role of the mitotic apparatus in k;eeping and restoring the euploid number is discussed.

## Abstract The hypothesis of functional hemizygosity has been examined for the Ξ±βamanitin resistant (Ama^R^, a codominant marker) locus in a series of Chinese hamster cell lines. Ama^R^ mutants were obtained from different cell lines, e.g., CHO, CHW, M3β1 and CHOβKl, at similar frequencies. After
## Abstract The frequency of mutations induced by ethyl methane sulfonate was compared in a pseudodiploid Chinese hamster cell strain and in a tetraploid substrain derived from it. The frequency of reverse mutations from glycine auxotrophy to glycine independence was similar in the two strains, as
## Abstract The toxicity and extent of growth inhibition produced by chloramphenicol (CAP) in CAP^s^ Chinese hamster cells (line V79β5) was found to be dependent on the type and concentration of hexose in the medium. In high levels of glucose (6.5 mM), cultures of CAP^s^ cells underwent 7β8 populat
## Abstract Somatic hybrids obtained by the selective method of Littlefield between a permanent line of Chinese hamster cells (Wg3) and one of mouse cells (3TP) showed a preponderance of biarmed (hamster) chromosomes. Under normal culture conditions (37Β°) the doubling time of the parental mouse cel
