✦ Synopsis


A comparative study of several precursor reaction path-ways for the synthesis of Pb free Bi-2223 is conducted. For the same overall starting composition, kinetics of 2223 formation and phase purity of end products depend, to a large extent, on the starting precursors. Among the methods tried, that involving two precursors, Bi2SrO 4 and (Sr,Ca)CuO 2, reported here for the first time, is shown to be the most suitable for synthesis of Pb free 2223. Comparison of our results on Pb free 2223 with those on Pb doped 2223 reported in the literature is discussed.
