The europium valence for EuCu 1.75 P 2 is examined by Eu MoK ssbauer spectroscopy and Eu L III -edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. On the basis of previous measurements of related phases with the ThCr 2 Si 2 structure-type, the europium valence in EuCu 1.75 P 2 is expected to be intermediate valent
