✦ Synopsis
Residual size contractions, (\Delta(3 d), \Delta(4 d)), and (\Delta(4 f+5 d)), in the relevant series ions with the filled (2 s^{2} 2 p^{6}-3 s^{2} 3 p^{6}-, 3 d^{10} 4 s^{2} 4 p^{6}-, 4 d^{10} 5 s^{2} 5 p^{6}-), and (4 f^{14} 5 d^{10} 6 s^{2} 6 p^{6})-electron shells have been demonstrated and evaluated over the rock-salt-series compounds. The obtained values range as follows: (\Delta(3 d)=) (1.44 \sim 1.59(\AA / 3 d) series), (\Delta(4 d)=1.30 \sim 1.45(\AA / 4 d) series ()), and (\Delta(4 f+5 d)=3.00 \sim 3.08(\AA / 4 f) plus-5d series). Since similar residual size contractions, (\Delta(3 d)=1.49 \sim 1.70 \AA) and (\Delta(4 d)=1.40 \sim) (1.46 \AA), have been obtained for the inert-gas series crystals with (f c c) structure, alkali-metal series crystals with bec structure, and IVb-element series crystals with diamond structure, these size contractions are attributed to the contractions in the cores of atoms and ions.
