✦ Synopsis

Multiple comparisons are commonly made in epidemiologic and genetic research. How to appropriately adjust for multiple comparisons remains a controversial issue. This note demonstrates, however, that large increases in the number of comparisons has a limited e!ect on the sample size required to maintain an experimentwise -level. In particular, the relative sample size required increases only linearly with the logarithm of the number of comparisons made.

Methods for optimal sample size determination are developed using four popular multiple comparison procedures (Sche!e's, Bonferroni's, Tukey's and Dunnett's procedures), where random samples of the same size n are to be selected from k (\*2) normal populations with common variance , and where primar

Tests for equal relative variation are valuable and frequently used tools for evaluating hypotheses about taxonomic heterogeneity in fossil hominids. In this study, Monte Carlo methods and simulated data are used to evaluate and compare 11 tests for equal relative variation. The tests evaluated incl

We present a survey of sample size formulas derived in other papers for pairwise comparisons of k treatments and for comparisons of k treatments with a control. We consider the calculation of sample sizes with preassigned per-pair, any-pair and all-pairs power for tests that control either the compa
