✦ Synopsis

This paper views the Lorentz reciprocal theorem of slow viscous flow as a thermodynamic theorem and shows that it is a special case of the more general (and powerful) reciprocal theorem of nonequilibrium thermodynamics due to Onsager, applied at the global (as opposed to local) level. The point is illustrated with two simple problems in viscous flow theory.
