The parameter of interest in a non-reactive isothermal gas-phase system prcparcd initially in a non-equilibrium state is (AE), the average energy transferred per collision. However, the parameter that is actually experimentally accessible is only its ensemble or bulk average {(A,F}). A simple test case is used to show that the energy dependence of (AE} and of (<AI?)) are qualitatively similar, but quantitatively different, sufficiently so as to be readily discernible.
