On the relation between certain artificial lakes and the associated seismic sequences. Eng. Geol., 8: 39--48.
Certain properties of th e time and magnitude distributions of the foreshocks and aftershocks of the three largest earthquakes believed to be associated with artificial lakes have been investigated. Evidence exists that the water impounding has influenced the time distribution of the foreshocks and to a lesser extent that of the aftershocks. The lakes have bad a rather weak influence on the magnitude distributions of the foreshocks and aftershocks. The difference between the magnitude of the largest aftershock and that of the main shock is small in almost all known cases of the reservoir-associated earthquakes. This probably means that the lakes have affected the ratio of the energy of the aftershocks to the energy of the main shock.
