β¦ Synopsis
The luminescence of Bi 3Ψ in the pyrochlore Gd 2 GaSbO 7 is evaluated in the 15 to 300 K temperature range. The rapid thermal quenching of Bi 3Ψ luminescence, despite the small Stokes shift, is postulated to involve a photoionization process arising from the interaction between the Bi 3Ψ 3 P 0, 1 excited states and the host lattice conduction band. The blue emission of the host lattice is attributed to the octahedral gallate groups of Gd 2 GaSbO 7 . The Bi 3Ψ luminescence Gd 2 GaSbO 7 , La 2 Zr 2 O 7 (pyrochlore structure), Y 2 O 3 (6uorite structure), and materials with the perovskite structure are compared to gain insight into structure-photoionization issues.

The luminescence intensity of Bi 3+ in Y203 decreases not only on increasing but also on decreasing the temperature. An explanation is proposed and the nature of the nonradiative process is discussed. Data on Bi3+-activated Lu203 and La203 are also reported.
