Abstract

The assumption of steady two‐dimensional flow imposes constraints on the motion of a layer of cold air propagating through a body of warm air. Some general properties, such as the propagation speed of the front, can be deduced from consideration of the equations of motion away from the frontal region. Thus the differences between anafronts and katafronts are discussed.
