✦ Synopsis

In a recent paper ; hereafter called Paper A) the author pointed out that multiple peaks in the Fourier spectra of the 5-rain oscillations as reported by others and discussed in several theoretical papers, do not characterize the average solar atmosphere, but result from insufficient statistical stability of the data. The averaged power spectrum (Figure ) of a 18"β€’ 120" region in the center of the disc observed for 75 rain with an aperture size of 3" β€’ 3" shows only one smooth single peak at 3.2 x ] 0-3 s-~. We report on results from photographic observations of photospheric oscillations as a function of depth. Using rms-values and power-spectra from shifts of entire line-profiles, we find qualitatively an increase of the velocity-amplitude with increasing height. We get more quantitative informations b

Observations of the 300 s photospheric oscillation on large solar surfaces (up to 5 '20" in diameter) using a sodium optical resonance cell seem to show that the power at long horizontal wavelengths is larger than previous results would indicate. The current models of the solar photosphere consisting of a large number of vertical columns of plasma seem to be in contradiction with the new observational data obtained from the spectrograms taken during the third flight of the Soviet Solar Stratospheric Observatory (SSO) on 1970, July 30. As it
