This paper investigates the power of a statistical procedure for comparing a unit's survival experience to a standard survival curve. The power of the statistical procedure provides a measure of how sensitive the test is to departures from the nominal values provided by the standard survival curve. This procedure has been used recently in a number ofevaluation ofcare studies. A power study for thirty-two adult blunt trauma patients, contributed by a participating hospital to a national data base collected at Washington Hospital Center, is detailed.
