The dynamics of a single spheroidal bubble accompanied by an open periodic wake were studied in water-glycerol solutions (1 < r) < 37 cP) by photographic techniques. The stability of the helical vortex, the frequency of the bubble rocking and the drag coefficient were found to be closely related. Th

โฆ Synopsis
Ahstraet-An effect of a regular periodic component of the drag on a rising spheroidal bubble in water (1800 < Re, < 6200) has been experimentally proven. Two frequency modes of the rotational drag component have been found: for 1800 < Reb < 2700 the Strouhal number SI, is a steep function of Reb; whereas for 2700 < Reb < 6200& is only weakly influenced by Reb. The vortex structure visualized, containing a fragment of a helical vortex, is associated with the periodicity of both the modes. The stability of the helical vortex is dependent on Reb. A similarity between the formation mechanism of a vortex street and a helical vortex wake is suggested.
