β¦ Synopsis
This paper is concerned with the distribution of stresses near an embedded flat parabolic crack in a body of infinite extent when the crack surface is subjected to uniform normal loading. It is shown that the crack opening shape for the flat parabolic crack is an elliptic paraboloid. Also. it is shown that the stresses possess a singularity of rmriP near the parabolic crack front and the dominant state of stress is plane strain near the crack front. The stress intensity factor for the opening mode of fracture, k,, is obtained for this configuration ofthe crack.

A method is proposed for the approximate evaluation of normal displacements and normal stresses on the plane of two coplanar cracks located inside an infinite isotropic elastic solid and subjected to normal internal pressure. The formulation results in a single integral equation for the unknown norm
