'Neutral red is a chloride. The dye base is insoluble in water. Thus, the latter will precipitate out, in the form of needle-shaped crystals, if a solution of the chloride is made more alkaline than p H 8.0. Consequently it was necessary to carry out the staining in a medium more acid than normal sea water (pH 8.2).
