✦ Synopsis
Describing ionic transport through regions where there is a non-zero space charge density by using the Nernst-Planck and Poisson equations involves some conceptual and mathematical diEiculties. In the present paper, the significance of the electroneutratity assumption and the potential difference derived from it, as well as the applicability conditions making this hypothesis valid, are discussed.
