✦ Synopsis
The pulse radiolysis of dioctyl sulpho~cci~~te (aerosol-Oi') H~~~hept~e solutions leads to formation of hydrated electrons in the aq!xous core of the inverted aerosol-OT miccl!es, The hydrated electrons are praduccdviadirectintenctian of the radiation with the aqueous regions and scavenging of electrons formed initially in the IIydroc~bon phase by the water bubbles The scnvcn$ng efficiency decreases with, decreasing radius of the water cluster. Hydrated elections are not formed below a critica! size of the solubihzed watt% ptiticles.
The quantum yield and wavelength of the maximum of the aniline-naphthalene sulphonate CANS! fluorescence are strongly dependent on the water content of aerosol-OT inverted micelfes. The fluorescence behavior indicates an inCrcaSe of polarity with increasing cluster radius. The polarity of very large water clusters (I = 73 A) is still lower than that ofbulk water. Water which is bound to Na+ c6unterions cannot effectively participate in the solvation of the dipolsr AXS excited states. '.' '_ ', .
