✦ Synopsis

T h e occurrence of ring molecules $8 a n d long c h a i n molecules Sn in liquid a n d a m o r p h o u s sulfur is r e a s o n a b l y certain. S t a r t i n g from t h e b e h a v i o u r of a m o r p h o u s sulfur, especially with regard to extraction with carbon disulfide, arguments are discussed for the presence in small amounts (order of 5Β°/o) of other molecular constituents. The facts may be explained by assuming these to be small unstable molecules Sn that transform slowly into chain sulfur at room temperature in the solid crystalline and plastic amorphous state. There is little evidence for their exact constitution, though in some cases the evidence points to $6 rings. Most facts may, however, also be explained by assuming that these small molecules are not a priori present but that they are split off from the long chains by the attack of the solvent during the extraction / process.

*) The use of t w o different symbols for $6 in its crystalline state 8) s) and in the liquid (Β’ and respectively) may be preferred, in accordance with the difference between co-and [~-sulfur for Sn ~) 8) and ~-, ~-and ),-sulfur for $8.
