✦ Synopsis
Resuming considerations owing to Freudenthal and Heller, the idea of a modified S-N curve for metal fatigue prediction is advocated for the case of cyclic loading with varying intensity. In deviation from the pioneering work mentioned above, the life-reducing interaction effect between cycles of different intensities is attributed in this paper to the fatigue limit lowering influence of compressive load peaks with high intensity. Such compressive peaks cause crack closure which increases the damaging effect of subsequent load cycles of low intensity. Using a modified Miner's rule. the modified S-N curve is determined analytically. The applicability of the modified curve for fairly accurate fatigue life prediction is demonstrated by means of examples, and the validity of the results obtained is verified experimentally.
