โœฆ Synopsis

In the present paper the dynamics of a non-smooth friction oscillator under selfand external excitation are investigated. The rich bifurcational behaviour predicted by numerical simulations is compared to experimental results. In order to predict the period and amplitude of the friction induced vibrations, the friction force can be modelled by means of friction characteristics. A more detailed look at the non-smooth transition points of the trajectories shows that an extension of the friction model is necessary. For that purpose a bristle model, a friction contact with tangential stiffness and damping and a stochastic friction model are investigated.

This paper introduces an active control technique that combats oscillations driven by dry friction forces. Dry friction can act as the excitation mechanism for some high amplitude oscillations; curve squeal from trains is a well known and notorious example. Another, more elementary, example is the o

Prevailing road surface conditions, the grip between tyres and the road surface, strongly correlate with traffic accident rate. Surface friction is reduced especially during snowfall or icing. Friction observations derived from Vaisala's optical DSC111 sensors, operated during two winter seasons (20
