✦ Synopsis

If concrete is tested by applying the load with rigid steel platens, restrained lateral deformations lead to a complicated multiaxial state of stress. Some methods to reduce the influence of friction between specimen and platens are discussed. Using aluminum sheets between platens and concrete compressive strength was found to be only 92% of compressive strength using rigid steel platens. With steel brushes instead of rigid steel platens the strength decreased to approximately 81%. A new method to determine concrete strength is described. Using a hydraulic cushion and individual pistons it is possible to reach uniformly distributed load all over the specimen.

487 488 Vol. 3, No. 4 COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH, CONCRETE, TEST METHODS, STRAIN * Bundesanstalt fur Materialprufung (BAM), Berlin -Federal Institute for Testing Materials.
