Abstract
This paper treats the importance of calibrating procedures and methods of chemical analysis against known reference materials, and gives examples of how even accredited laboratories return erroneous results, with particular reference to the determination of chloride and sodium in hardened concrete. It is pointed out that much standardised work on methods has been laid down, but this has little value if reference materials are not available. A scheme that has been used for the production of reference material for this latter purpose is detailed.
